As a avid boater and boat mechanic on barnegat bay my entire life Totally breaks my heart-to hear this horrible news but it infuriates me To try and understand how there were 6 people on a center console boat and they manage to strike a giant piling marker in broad daylight (Im sorry) it doesn’t make sense to me this is like the 4th incident with a boat striking channel marker in like last 5 years 🥺🥺💔💔💔 🤔🤔🤔 the only logical thing that I can possibly think of is he was staring at the houses pass the marker and didn’t notice the channel marker right in front of him as he was approaching it.

This is a funky channel marker because the channel veers left and right and if you go straight you’ll be parked on a sandbar. I agree with the comment where someone recommended the township add more reflective signals or paint it bright color to increase visibility. It is a rusty old channel marker.

Prayers 🙏, a few years back a green channel marker moved a couple hundred yards due to a storm outside of LBI and we ran a ground and got stuck. Coast guard said unfortunately it’s normal for them to be moved early in the season until they can fix them from the winter storms typically end of May/june .

Those of us that frequent this area can’t fathom how this happened. The marker isn’t a buoy. It’s literally a marked marker. My son went to school with him. It’s sickening.

I hear of preventable deaths so much more often since moving to south jersey, I don’t know if this case was the result of negligence but I just hope everyone stays safe this summer 🤍
