Listen, listen, I don’t like Freud as much as the next psych student on the Oedipus complex BUT HEAR ME OUT. His theories of the unconscious mind are some of the coolest and the structural model are some of my favorite to write papers on. My fav art piece I’ve done was also slightly inspired by Him.

Freud had quite a few misses but he was also misunderstood a lot. I would encourage looking in to Jacques Lacan, a post-freudian psychoanalyst, who in a sense radicalized freudian concepts and took them beyond biological and paternal/familiar fields; focusing more on structuralism and the symbolic, for example not on mother or father per se but as to what the paternal figure represents and what function does it serve
