We use they/them in the singular all the time. STORY: I found a wallet looked inside for the owners license, drove to their house and returned it to them. NORMAL STORY, USING THEY/THEM IN THE SINGULAR. Its normally used when the author chooses to not tell the gender.

I think the best way I've heard it explained was that if you find someone's wallet or belonging on the street (No name, no id, no specific gender indicator) you would say "Wow I need to return this to them" or "That's sucks for them".

usually I agree with you but with this one you are wrong. Language doesn't need to fit anything. Is is just language. If your "narrative" is that you call an actual table a chair, does not make it a chair. It will always be a table.
