I think after season 1 the writers slowly and subtly changed Elenas personality each season in order to make her more compatible with Damon and less compatible with Stefan. However, I think these changes are why people prefer Elena in the earlier seasons and call her annoying in the rest of the show. People love to say it is because she became a vampire but I think the subtle changes started before that. I absolutely LOVE Elena in season 1 but I can even notice the differences in season 2 and by season 3-4 she definitely became a lot more one dimensional and lost all the fun quirks in season 1 which made her so good. I think when she was with Stefan her character felt stronger as it felt like she had a separate life to Stefan while also dating him (which is healthier imo) she was also way more of a man hater, had a lot more independence and a bigger back bone. I even found her humour to be funnier in the early seasons. I think they slowly stripped away her personality in order to prepare her to be compatible with Damon as Damon is a more domineering and in your face character than Stefan. This meant when she was with Damon, her entire personality was Damon. It felt like she did not have a life of her own outside of Damon and her character became reduced to a ‘damsel in distress’ for Damon to constantly save. In order for Delena to work Damon’s character had to shine whereas Elenas character was repressed. This is why people argue Elena had no character development, her development actually regressed. To be honest I’d have loved to see Elena be single for a couple seasons and just focusing on herself instead of being overshadowed by a partner.
