It’s basically a mildly tuned BMW M52. That’s why a lot of people compare it to the US-spec BMW S52 — it’s not a completely different engine architecture, just a more developed version of the M52 with a bit more displacement, cams, and tuning. The Euro BMW S50B32, on the other hand, is a totally different beast with individual throttle bodies and a much more aggressive head design.
