Let them cry. Calmly Name the feeling with them. Probably disappointed or annoyed. “I know, you wanted to keep playing. But it’s time to put it away.” Explain that you can cry to get your feelings out, but you can’t cry to get what you want. Also, get in the routine of timers. “When my alarm goes off, we turn it off.” Then have them repeat it so it becomes more concrete. “What happens when my alarm goes off?” Have them answer “time to get off.” Practicing that and it becoming routine at a young age is so important and also very helpful!

If they are having tantrums when their screen time is up it’s time for the screens to be taken away. Next time you give them the iPad calmly say you have x amount of time. Give a 10, 5 and 2 min warning. If they have a tantrum the iPad is done. They will be mad/disappointed/sad and that is OKAY. You validate their feelings but hold the boundary. In my opinion I’d take the iPad away for a good bit if not permanently. I have 2.5 year old twins and they do amazing with no iPad. We have a family iPad that stays in the closet and only comes out for flights.

Any sort of screen time I tell my toddler at the beginning there’s no tantrums when I have to take it away. If there’s a tantrum we will no longer be using it. If she has a tantrum she won’t use it the next day and I explain why. I also tell her she can be upset but it doesn’t mean she’s getting it back. We have a little fire tablet thing that has kids games and stuff but she only uses it every now and then.

My son and DIL allow them only at grandma’s for an hour 1x week. Shows they can watch are limited to learning shows loaded on their iPads. I set a timer and they ask minutes left. If a show has too much time left I say we’re going to do something else (go to a park for example) that they can finish watching it later. Parents don’t use them at home on trips or at restaurants. Only at grandma’s.

The stricter I was with rules the more out of control my kids got. I do let them finish whatever task game they are playing first .

Timers work for people of ALL AGES!!! Tell him you have ___ mins then we have to put it away and do _____ and follow through with it!!! You’re not a failure, some days we are just surviving ❤️

Don’t give it to them. My oldest is obsessed with TV. When she starts acting crazy when I turn it off, we take a break for a while. It’s a privilege not a right.

We ended up putting them away now 3 months later they never came back out and they haven’t mentioned it once! Doing the same now with tv time. If we are having big tantrums then it’s a problem and we don’t need said things!! Just know you’re not a failure and we’re all learning as we go!

Tablet break for a week or so. My daughter gets it 1 day or less out of the week unless we are using it for learning

When taking the iPad away turns into crying it tells me it’s time for a break for awhile for both of my kids.

Girl. You’re not failing. Sometimes my 3 year has a hard time giving it up. I set a timer, give him options of other things to do once time is up and talk about the next time he can have it… and sometimes… I let him have a little meltdown. 🫠😘 solidarity

Don’t ask me I got fed up, snatched it from him, and threw it in the trash while he screamed at me. I realized it was my fault for giving in. I dug it out of the trash because it’s expencive 😅 but now he only gets it on car rides over 3 hours or in airplanes.

No child under 8 years old should have an iPad. Take it away and don't give it back. They need to have actual toys.
