if i gotta do all that, i picked the wrong guy for that part of the job. i find my jobs run the best when i trust the journeymen in the field to know what they’re doing, to ask questions when they have them, and to be internally motivated to progress the project forward. the best decisions on every job are made in the field, not at the office or gang box. really the only thing i don’t rely on them to do for themselves aside from laying out tasks is keeping track of materials on hand. while another foreman is bird dogging his men all day, i’m going around counting what we have and comparing it to what we need. i also deliver materials to the teams instead of having apprentices fetch everything and it saves a lot of time.

Mathew Marshall :
A journeyman should already know how to do all that

A good journeyman should be capable of doing that himself

jobs where the foreman lays out all his jman run way smoother than letting all the jman look at the plans for direction.

My foreman pulled me into the office and told me I'd made "the list" and then explained that the very small list is comprised of people they have deemed competent and now I get to do the harder more technical shit.

it all trickles down, when a journeyman has an apprentice that messes uo its the Journeyman's fault. He obviously didn't explain it well enough. That trickles all the way down from PM,Superintendent, Foreman,Journeyman, then apprentice.

Make everything simple as possible and make sure they carry a note pad so it’s written down. That being said different not every job is for every guy. It’s your job to put the right guys in position if it’s complicated I’m putting my best guys on it

Not doing this. If it's that technical I'll have at least one senior hand on it, more depending on time constraints. But if I can get by with one then I'll also put a junior journeyman and/or an apprentice with him. If I don't have at least 2 senior journeyman that can handle every aspect of their role I already have a huge problem. Micromanaging the men will make your life miserable.

I make or break my job with bullshit contract drawings, to the best of my abilities. HVAC /sheet metal. Always getting worse since 1999. That’s not our job. Real engineers DO NOT EXIST anymore.
