i hated it. i know now it’s dated literary fiction and not sci-fi/horror adjacent like everyone made it out to be. i felt it did its characters dirty, found no real thesis, and meandered all the way to the very unsatisfactory ending. i get why other people love it, but it really fell flat to me compared to other fiction of the time

in the version of the book that I had, the introduction literally stated that we weren't going to get answers in the end and I think that made my reading experience better because I knew from the start that it wasn't about that.

reminded me of Camus' The Plague. in a nonsensical world where you watch others die until you also die, and nothing you do seems to matter, is it possible to find meaning in your actions? a brilliant absurdist novel, depicting the issue more clearly than the classics

I thought it was a wonderful exploration of loneliness, solitude, creating meaning for oneself. I’ve always feared that I would just give up if I was in their situation and it was interesting to see how she kept going even when it seemed pointless.

The book is bleak but also sort of hopeful. I really loved it and didn’t care that there isn’t a satisfying resolution. The compulsion to wrap things up neatly is why I often don’t read fiction anyway, it felt more realistic that there weren’t any particularly satisfying conclusions.
