To say Jon is a flawed character is an UNDERSTATEMENT but i still love him and Martin as characters (and as a couple)

HR approved. Exactly, thank you. I love him as a character, but I would hate him as a boss or coworker.

Jonathan Sims is undeniably under qualified and the wrong person to do what Gertrude Robinson did, but he was a good archivist, confirmed by the Eye itself and Jonah Magnus

You are so right, except... I do think he has a bit of imposter syndrome because deep down he knows he's not qualified and Sasha would've been a better fit and he projects those feelings of inadequacy onto Martin and he's so insufferable because he really tries to keep the facade that he's supposed to be where he is and Elias made the right choice. It leads to the same outcome because of course he wouldn't ask for help because then he'd have to admit he's out of his depth. He's a flawed character but that's what makes him a great character ugh, I don't want to relisted to The Magnus Archives but I think it would be a great experience 🤔😭

Fable :
I truly love that his flaws and traits are never explained or justified by the story; he's allowed to just be a mess. Yet we also get A Guest for Mr. Spider which gives us just enough of a glimpse into his childhood to give a little context to why he is the way that he is.

This is why I love TMA so much. All of the characters feel so human. They are stubborn selfish, self sacrificial, angry - and above all, afraid

i will add that a lot of his self importance is a facade for his deep, deep insecurities. he doesnt even believe the shit he says. it makes him both extremely compelling and very annoying. jon my beloved lil guy <4

I know I would absolutely dislike Jon if I met him irl, especially S1 Jon. Because he’s fictional, i understand and love how complexly written he is. He’s a phenomenal character

i agree !!! (although he is very insecure, especially with his competences as archivist because he deep down KNOWS he’s not qualified and that makes him aggressive and desperate to be taken seriously, he even goes so far as to lie about his age just to seem more qualified/serious and he takes his insecurities out on people like Martin whom he deems to be even less qualified and an easy target, because maybe if he points out Martin’s lack of qualifications, then maybe someone like Sasha [who is very competent] would be too focused on Martin to see how much Jon was under qualified), and yet i love him!!! so much!! he’s such a GOOD, FLAWED character!!!

Hes defintiely unlikeable, but what i think is cool in a storytelling sense is that The Fears exacerbate his flaws. Each fear has a surface level effect on the characters (worms, rot, darkness) but also an interpersonal or metaphorical effect, too. Jon was standoffish at first, The Eye helped make him paranoid and untrusting. He was kinda a jerk at first, but did you notice after Jane Prentiss shows up, his friendships degrade more quickly? one might say theyre...corrupted? idk maybe its obvious but i always thought it was a nice touch.
