@sothebys: Watch auctioneer Helena Newman drop the final hammer after six bidders battled over a Mark Rothko painting in last week’s Modern Evening Auction, presented in partnership with CELINE. It achieved $9.3 million at #SothebysNewYork, making it the highest price for a work on paper by the artist in this scale. Rothko created ‘Untitled’ at the end of the 1950s, when his work turned to the sublime. By applying thin veils of pigment through a feathering technique, Rothko eliminated hard edges from his paintings. The resulting compositions radiate magnificent weightlessness.
