@gearheadgreg: 5 tips from dad for prepping a block for engine building. He’s got an old Mustang that runs 10s and pops wheelies at the drags, so he knows a thing or two about a thing or two. We’re rebuilding a Ford 351C for my 1973 Mustang Mach 1 and he had a bunch of tips to share with me that are good advice for anyone rebuilding an engine. Please share some of your engine building tips- I’d love to learn more! #musclecar #projectcar #mustang #mustangmach1 #enginerebuild

Coffee filters are lint free. Used them to wipe down bores a few times.

And use a thread chaser not a tap, your not cutting new threads, your cleaning them.

use thread chasers as taps are for cutting threads and can cause excess tolerance.....your out there actually getting it done so I hope the best of luck with it😁

Just a dude 🤷 :
I prefer a 3 stome hone preferbly 220-300 grit and atf then i tun a 50-550 grit ball hone backwards to take the peaks off itll help plataue it but a stone hone helps tons smoothing taper and minimal ridge over

Just a trick for cleaning those bores, use gojo creamy hand cleaner to remove all the swarf from the honing process. It will also make those walls silky smooth and manageable. Joking.... It will clean them beautifully and then you can use oil to keep them from rusting

All good steps, but usually done before painting as I prefer to run it through the wash cabinet one more time after all those steps.

Never use a standard tap to clean out threads and why not use a good flat stone to deburr the main cap registers?

Need to measure those cylinders for tapering unless you had it machined. But since you ran a home thru them, I’d say you didn’t have machine work done

I like using ATF and white lint free shop towels on the cylinders. Really shows greyness until they’re perfect.

I always figure 2 full cases of brake clean per engine rebuild. And that’s including having the engine block and heads put in our giant parts washer.

10/10 clean is the name of the game. If you want to step it up a little get you a bore brush with dawn and clean the cylinders then wipe clean with ATF. Dawn,ATF and brake cleaner is your best friend

Dad should have used a scrub brush on the cylinders to get the fine metal filings out of the tiny grooves, dirt is not your friend. Looks great otherwise
