@doctorjjanette: The heartbreaking loss of NASCAR Legend Kyle Busch is a powerful reminder that infections can turn serious quickly. Pneumonia and sepsis do not only affect the elderly or medically fragile, they can happen to anyone especially if it’s an aggressive infection with delayed treatment and an already weak immune system. Professional race car drivers are exposed to some unique medical and physiological health risks because of G forces, heat, vibration, speed, fumes resulting in respiratory irritation, dehydration, electrolyte abnormalities, and even cardiac strain because of adrenaline surges, increasing blood pressure and heart rate. Know the warning signs: fever, chills, trouble breathing, confusion, extreme weakness, rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, or coughing up blood. Early treatment saves lives. If you have an infection that’s not getting better or that’s getting worse. Seek medical care right away. Sometimes IV antibiotics and fluids is necessary and if started early, can mean the difference between life and death. The majority of pneumonia deaths are in those over the age of 65. But sadly sometimes it can impact even healthy athletes. Protect yourself by staying up to date on pneumonia vaccines, washing hands often, getting enough rest, staying hydrated, and never ignoring worsening symptoms. Sepsis is a medical emergency.
