That is what gleaning meant. Now look behind them. The background is full of abundance: horses, wagons, workers, massive piles of grain, wealth everywhere. And in front of all that prosperity, these women bend toward the dirt searching for leftovers one piece at a time. That contrast made people uncomfortable. Millet painted poor laborers on a massive scale usually reserved for kings, religion, and mythology. Suddenly the working class looked impossible to ignore. The Gleaners is not just a farming scene.
