I’ve been reading through so many of your comments, questions, and personal experiences, and I really do appreciate everyone who has taken the time to share their stories. It’s been interesting to see how differently thumb sucking has affected people and how different approaches have worked for some and not for others. I’ve also seen quite a few comments questioning our decision as parents, suggesting we should’ve just let Mikko stop on her own or that there was nothing wrong with her smile to begin with. And I want to be clear about something: we thought her smile was beautiful, too. Her appearance was never the concern or the reason behind her dental treatment. Our concern was her dental health, development, and the potential long-term effects of a habit that had already affected her bite. As her parents, we had to consider those things while also understanding that thumb sucking was a major source of comfort and sensory regulation for her. This wasn’t a decision we made lightly. It was a decision made with her dental team based on her individual needs. I think sometimes we get so caught up in comparing our own experiences that we forget every child is different, even children with the same diagnosis. What worked for you or your child may not be what’s best for someone else’s. We’re sharing our experience because I know there are other families navigating similar situations, not because we’re looking for approval of our parenting decisions. At the end of the day, our priority has always been her health, comfort, and overall well-being. And I hope that as we continue sharing, we can have conversations that are more about understanding one another than judging decisions made for children whose individual needs we may not fully know. #autism #dental #teeth #stimming #dentist
