@mimiczoneyt: The SR-72 Darkstar is Lockheed Martin’s next-generation hypersonic reconnaissance aircraft, developed by their secretive Skunk Works division as the successor to the famous SR-71 Blackbird. Designed to reach speeds of Mach 6—about 7,400 kilometers per hour, or six times the speed of sound—it can travel anywhere on Earth in under two hours, flying at altitudes between 80,000 and 100,000 feet, far higher than any fighter jet or surface-to-air missile can effectively operate. Its biggest innovation is the Turbine-Based Combined Cycle (TBCC) engine system, which works like a standard jet engine for takeoff and low-speed flight, then switches to a high-power scramjet mode to accelerate to hypersonic speeds without needing rocket boosters. Built using advanced heat-resistant composites and ceramics that can withstand temperatures up to 1,500°C caused by friction at extreme speeds, it uses speed and altitude as its primary defense—even if detected by radar, it moves so fast that enemy systems cannot track, target, or intercept it in time. While popularized as the “Darkstar” in Top Gun: Maverick where it was shown reaching Mach 10, the real SR-72 is an unmanned or optionally manned platform still in development, intended for high-speed intelligence gathering, surveillance, and potential strike missions, with service expected sometime in the 2030s. #edit #fyp #darkstar #ilikeplanes
