I sprained my ankle on Day 2 of my Türkiye trip and genuinely thought my vacation might be over. The first thing I did was stop walking and assess the situation. Since I was in a busy tourist area and didn’t have any medical supplies, we improvised. I used a head scarf as a temporary compression wrap, found a plastic bag, got some ice from a nearby vendor, and started icing it right away while keeping my foot elevated on a bench. If something similar happens while you’re traveling: ✅ Stop and assess before pushing through the pain ✅ Rest the injured ankle immediately ✅ Ice it as soon as possible (even improvised ice packs help) ✅ Use a scarf, wrap, or elastic bandage for gentle compression ✅ Elevate the foot whenever you can ✅ Don’t be afraid to sit for 20-30 minutes before deciding your next move Once the initial pain settled down, I was able to carefully bear weight. Over the next several days, I continued: ✅ Ice, compression, and elevation every evening ✅ An ankle wrap/compression bandage while walking ✅ Anti-inflammatory medication for pain and swelling ✅ Gradual return to activity as tolerated One thing I paid close attention to was whether there were signs of a more serious injury. I was able to bear weight, didn’t have significant instability, and didn’t have focal bone tenderness that made me highly concerned about a fracture. That said, not every ankle injury is “walk it off” territory. 🚩 Seek medical attention if you can’t bear weight, have severe swelling or deformity, significant instability, worsening pain, numbness, or pain directly over the bones of the ankle or foot. I was fully prepared to visit a local doctor or hospital if needed, but thankfully it never came to that. Vacation injuries happen. Having a basic game plan can make the difference between losing your trip and getting back out there safely. Save this for your next trip - you never know when you’ll need it. . #anklesprains
