On December 2nd, 2024 we lost our dad to suicide. Our lives were shattered, broken into pieces, and changed forever. It was a huge shock because we did not know he was struggling this bad. Before my dad took his life , suicide was a foreign term to me. I never quite understood it and never thought that it would come to MY family. Nobody does. This tragedy opened my eyes to all of the evil in this world. You never really know the weight someone is carrying behind their smile. Not all suicidal individuals are miserable on the outside. My dad’s smile was radiant and his humor was infectious. Over a span of 2 weeks , an acute crisis stripped that from the world. After this occurred, I began to struggle with mental health and suicidal ideation myself. I felt alone, isolated, hurt, and scared. I just wanted all of the pain to stop. I struggled with suicidal thoughts and mental health for months before getting the help I needed. I now understand that no matter how deep of a hole you are in, you can always find rest and peace within God. Suicide is not something that only happens on TV , it’s not conformed to an age group, it’s not too far to reach , it’s not a joke , and it’s a very real thing. This can affect your family too. When you hear the word “suicide” don’t wince, don’t brush it off, and don’t mistake it for something it’s not. It’s real, it’s raw, it’s reality. It’s life changing. Check in on your loved ones , love on them and hug on them. Pay attention to them and be intenional with the time you have with them because you never know when it will be stripped from you. If you are struggling, please know that you are not alone. Your story matters. Your presence matters. You matter. #suicideprevention #youmatter #MentalHealth
