Spoiler: best friends and neighbors Céline and Alice lives are shattered when Céline’s young son, Max, accidentally falls from a balcony while Alice is watching him. Consumed by grief and a growing, vengeful resentment toward Alice, Céline snaps. Alice suspects Céline replaces her mother-in-law's heart medication with a placebo, causing the older woman to suffer a fatal heart attack. Wanting to be free of any emotional ties so she can target Alice's family, Céline drugs her own husband, Damian, with chloroform and cuts his wrists to stage a suicide. Having gained the sympathy of the neighborhood, a grieving Céline is briefly taken in by Alice and Simon. While Alice is away gathering Céline's belongings, Céline strikes. She sedates Simon and little Theo, and when Alice returns, the two women physically fight. Céline ultimately overpowers Alice and chloroforms her. To finish the job, Céline disconnects the boiler to stage a fatal gas leak, killing both Alice and Simon. She deliberately spares Theo. Because the courts are completely unaware of her crimes, Céline is viewed as a grieving mother who is kindly taking in her late friend's child. In the film's final, chilling scene, Céline is seen wearing one of Alice’s earrings, having fully usurped her identity and successfully claimed Theo as her own.
