Day 2️⃣ Northern White Rhinos 🦏 Fondly known as “The Girls”, Najin and her daughter Fatu are protected 24/7 by armed rangers at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Fatu is playful and mischievous, often charging across the plains to wallow in the mud after rain, while Najin is calmer and keeps her in line. They are the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. Decimated by poaching and conflict, a population of thousands fell to just 15 by the 1980s. Translocated from Dvůr Králové Zoo to Kenya in 2009 alongside Sudan and Suni in the hope of breeding, those hopes were sadly never realised. Suni died in 2013 and Sudan in 2018. With no living males left, the species now depends on advanced reproductive technologies such as IVF and surrogacy. Time is critical, as Najin and Fatu are ageing and vital knowledge risks being lost forever.
