@sophiiaredjeb: I recently released an independent report: the Human Cost of the Partner Income Test - based on 794 Australians impacted by the rule. Partner income testing affects a range of payments including the Disability Support Pension, Age Pension and Carer Payment. For many, declaring a partners income is the choice between love and survival. For others, it’s the thing preventing them being able to leave an unsafe relationship. Read and share the report via the link in bio or: https://linktr.ee/sophiaredjeb @Tanya Plibersek end the Partner Income Test. #disability #centrelink #welfare #dvawareness #auspol
im in DSP and it hurts that centerlink takes away $700+ a fortnight because im in a relationship. If my partner tries to take on extra shifts to cover bills and food, my income is cut more than the difference he earns. im medically permanently unfit for work and this will be our whole life sadly.

The Partner Income Test is a tax on the poorest people in our society.

Centrelink has decided to pay me one week of rent and nothing else often because of the income test 🙃

it's the opposite of a work incentive! I stopped working full time because my partner would've been cut off his DSP altogether, and we all know how complicated it is to reapply so I had to drop my work to part time which obvs means he still loses money and so do I 🤦🏻♀️

The same thing happens in Aotearoa, but the Disability Support Services Bill currently before Parliament would take it further. Means testing already exists here, and this bill expands expectations into immediate family, including parents and siblings, increasing pressure on whānau to provide financial support before government assistance is accessed. To all kiwis, Submissions are open until 16th June if you want to oppose it.

the PIT isn't a work incentive, it's an ABUSE incentive. The government knows this and doesn't give two fucks. But hey, not like they care about femicide anyway even when it isn't related to benefit poverty. I suppose they're consistent like that.

not only does it force disabled people to become financially dependent on their partners, but it also gets reduced the more your partner works so you both end up with less money for more effort. it's ridiculous.

Centrelink are all about providing support to those who need it, yet they put people into situations that can lead to financial abuse then won’t do anything to help them. If you are in a pension like DSP, you shouldn’t have this cut just because your partner earns what Centrelink consider a reasonable income back in 1999!

It opens the door for financial abuse of already vulnerable people. The government fails disabled, children, and women in this realm.

This affects those on carers pension as well. My time is fully tied up in caring, I simply can't work traditionally without risking the safety of the person in my care. I am already on a reduced pension because I got married (Didn't know my pay would be affected, learned the hard way). We survive on that reduced pension because any work would rock a very tenuous boat that is our situation. The whole partner thing needs to go for everyone!

If a retail worker on casual got into a relationship or marriage they’d not loose their job! But DSP which is the same amount toughly will immediately cut out for them!

I can't get a share house - the only rentals i can afford on the dsp cause that makes me in a defacto relationship which means my dsp is cut. so I'm stuck in a toxic position living with my mum which is not healthy in any way. Every other government agency wouldn't class it a defacto but centre stink does

I have never and will never declare a romantic relationship to Centrelink. The partner income test is such a dehumanising and degrading practice. The way our country treats its most vulnerable is absolutely disgusting and I genuinely hate it here, if I could afford it I’d immigrate to somewhere in Scandinavia/The Baltics, or just Europe in general, and renounce my Australian citizenship cause this place would rather see its people suffer than thrive.

@AlboMP @Australian Labor Party @LNP - Liberal National Party @Tanya Plibersek Why do I have to choose between love and independence? I didn't choose disability, I didnt choose capitalism, I didn't choose to exist, But i'm here in 2026 living under a capitalist Labor regime, unable to work but if I choose love, I will lose the $400 a week that keeps me alive.
Now I might lose my NDIS too.
