@thetattedbaddie: As the poem suggests, “Tshepo” (my name), meaning “hope” or “trust” in Sesotho, which is my father’s home language, is a language that’s foreign to my tongue. Yup. I’m a Tshepo who predominantly speaks isiZulu. You can guess just how fragmented my identity as a Sotho man is. In this poem, I try to navigate this conundrum by tracing how I even adopted isiZulu as my mother tongue and answer whether not speaking my father’s tongue fluently is rejecting his culture, which in turn is rejecting myself. #poetry #spokenword #questioningidentity
