After the war, the Partition of the Ottoman Empire allowed foreign powers such as Greece, Britain, France, and Italy to occupy different parts of Anatolia. Many Turks believed the empire was collapsing and their homeland was being taken away. In 1919, Mustafa Kemal arrived in Samsun and began organizing resistance movements. He united military officers, local militias, and civilians under a nationalist movement that wanted full independence. A new parliament, the Grand National Assembly, was created in Ankara, which became the center of the resistance. The war was fought on several fronts. The biggest battles happened against Greece in western Anatolia. Greek forces advanced deep into Turkish territory, but Turkish nationalist forces managed to stop them in important battles such as the Battle of Sakarya and the Great Offensive of 1922. These victories pushed the Greek army out of Anatolia. Turkish forces also fought against Armenian forces in the east and French troops in the south. The war ended with the victory of the Turkish nationalists. In 1923, the Treaty of Lausanne officially recognized the independence of modern Turkey. Soon after, the Republic of Turkey was declared, and Mustafa Kemal received the surname “Atatürk,” meaning “Father of the Turks.” Atatürk then started major reforms to modernize the country. He abolished the Ottoman sultanate, introduced secular laws, changed the alphabet from Arabic to Latin, expanded education, and encouraged industrial and social reforms.
