Today's nose landing gear collapse of a Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 at Frankfurt Airport, which injured several employees, has immediately drawn comparisons to a similar British Airways 787-8 incident at London Heathrow nearly five years ago. On June 18, 2021, a British Airways 787-8 registered G-ZBJB suffered an inadvertent nose landing gear retraction while parked at Heathrow's Terminal 5, preparing to operate a cargo flight to Frankfurt. The aircraft's nose struck the ground, damaging the lower forward fuselage. The co-pilot and a member of the cargo loading team sustained minor injuries. The final report by the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), published in November 2022, concluded that the collapse was primarily the result of a maintenance error during ground operations. A ground engineer had inadvertently inserted the nose landing gear downlock pin into the wrong hole during a maintenance cycle. When the gear lever was selected up, the gear retracted. The AAIB also found that the design of the aircraft's nose landing gear downlock assembly contributed to the error, with two holes located so close together that the pin could be inadvertently inserted in the wrong location. Crucially, Boeing had issued a Service Bulletin in 2018, and the FAA had issued a matching Airworthiness Directive in January 2020, requiring the installation of a cover over the wrong hole to prevent exactly this kind of mistake. British Airways had not yet completed that modification on G-ZBJB at the time of the accident. It is far too early to draw any conclusions about what happened today at Frankfurt. The exact cause of the Lufthansa 787-9 collapse will only be determined once the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) completes its investigation in cooperation with Lufthansa and Boeing. What is known so far is that the Lufthansa aircraft was stationary at the gate, with jet bridges attached and cargo loading already underway, when the collapse occurred. Crew members and ground staff were on board, but passengers had not yet boarded for the scheduled flight to Los Angeles.
