You have clearly never driven an old car.. you lift up the clutch until you feel the pull of the car and meet with the gas, same when you change gears while driving.. it’s only newer cars you can release the clutch full without meeting it with the gas and especially new Volkswagen cars..

Some people when strat moving they left a clutch and pushing gas pedal at same time to avoid stalling the engine

R is for race mode, typically only engage that when you’re doing above 70mph. Source- trust me I’m a manual gearbox👌🏼
