The Black Stone in the Kaaba was not unique in pre-Islamic Arabia. Stone veneration was widespread across the peninsula, tied to sacred stones, mountains, distinctive rock formations, and particular trees. A red stone was associated with the deity of the South Arabian city of Ghaiman, and a white stone stood in the Kaaba of al-Abalat, near Tabala, south of Mecca. The religion behind all of this was pre-Islamic Arabian polytheism: not one organized faith, but tribal paganism spread across the region.
