@maisonrickie: Today, let’s dive deeper into the concept of different kinds of travel and how it specifically relates to habitus and doxa. Your upbringing has a ton of influence in how you move about the world you live in and travel is one of the clearest demonstrations of this. Side note: I’ve been loving Paris so much 💙 I’m seeing such a different side of the city from the last time I was here
When you’re rich you don’t need the rush to see everything as you can come back to that place next time, and you don’t need to make the most of your money either. Extremely planning happens when you don’t know if you’re ever be able to come back to that place and spent a lot of your savings on the trip, so you need to make the most of it.

I put it this way: life is about what you’re willing to struggle for. I am willing to do what it takes to stay and live in Paris because it feels like home.

I was not born into money but live comfortably with art and culture as the top priority during this human existence…saying that rushing to pack as much into life has always been incomprehensible and futile

These videos have been so helpful for me to understanding my own upbringing. My mom always tried to raise me and my brother as if we were richer than we really were, putting us in private schools even if behind the scenes we were cutting expenses on many other things. However, I could not afford the same leisure as my classmates, I’d spend the summer at a local beach in Venezuela while they would go to Madrid to play soccer with the Real Madrid. We were not the same. I was raised in a very judgmental and classist environment and what resulted is a complex system of contradictions. I was very lucky to have had an aunt that worked for an American airline company and thus was able to start spending summers in the US with her when I was around 12. These trips never felt rushed or packed with a bunch of activities, so when my mom took my brother and I to Europe when I was around 17 and she planned out many museums and restaurants and stuff to see, I kind of hated it. Everything felt so rushed and I had no time to take anything in. It was frustrating. I recently went to Japan with my partner and I understood that this was a very important trip and that it would probably be a long time before we could do anything like it again so I strap my shoes and did my +20K steps a day to take in as much as I could, but I miss so much the feeling of traveling without having to justify myself.

When I travel I like to temporarily live there. I'm not interested in checking off a list, queveing with other tourists. I want to meet locals, eat where they eat, go where they go, connect with the local community and culture.

I realized after taking a few vacations that I understood the phrase “I need a vacation from my vacation” because I noticed I always slammed packed my itinerary when I get to wherever I go and end up extra bunt out from already being burnt out from WORK. So now I make sure to have at least 3 days of total rest.

As someone who grew up poor and just got into traveling… I’m traveling like Thomas 😭😭 maybe one day I’ll get to go back and be like Naomi. But in this economy? In this life? There’s just too much to see!

I was asked a similar question about my Asia trip. There was a dramatic pause before I replied with “because I have free will”. It was as though I needed to justify the trip.

I exist in both. At a recent dinner, someone asked me what I liked about Paris. I was stumped. I…..like Paris. But the first time or two I go a place, I’m likely to have a list of things and places I want to see and do during the time I’m there.
