I lived in a hall style dorm it was pretty much the unwritten rule leave your door open when you are down to hang out and if it’s closed assume they don’t want to be bothered so don’t knock

Left my door open first week and met this one chick. I was her MOH, talked her through labor with her son, supported her through parental problems, and dropped my life to catch her when her husband died. Other than our husbands, we're each other's people. The friends I met my first week of college are the ones I still talk to decades later.

Most schools we visited said it’s a fire hazard to leave doors open and RAs are trained to close them 🤷♀️

My son was in the first move in phase. He called me after a couple of days depressed and lonely. I told him to keep his door open, invite others with their doors open to go to dinner,and also to go outside and help people in rooms near him move in. He’s 30s now and still close with his college crew.

It really does work. And when people ask you to go to reasonable events on campus like eating or things like that, say yes. My friend and I used to get dinner and go sit at the football field to listen to the band practice. Her cousins were in the band. 25 years later, still friends.

I told my son that, because that’s what we did and it was great. But his dorm didn’t allow it, the RA would come down and tell him to shut it, even on move in and out day, which was annoying - they had electronic locks on the doors and said having them open drained the batteries or were constantly signaling or something 🤷🏼♀️kind of a bummer
