Drake Nash :
The word "nigger" has a long and painful history rooted in slavery, segregation, racism, and the dehumanization of Black people. It was used for centuries to demean, intimidate, and justify the unequal treatment of Black Americans and people of African descent. Although some people within the Black community have attempted to reclaim variations of the word and use it in different social contexts, its origins remain tied to hatred, oppression, and violence. Because of that history, many people believe the word still carries harmful baggage regardless of who uses it.
The continued use of the word on social media can normalize language that was originally designed to strip people of their dignity. When used casually, it can blur the understanding of its historical significance and send mixed messages to younger generations about respect, identity, and self-worth. Rather than embracing a term created to degrade Black people, many argue that it is more empowering to use language that reflects pride, unity, and mutual respect. While opinions differ within the Black community, the discussion ultimately comes down to whether a word born from oppression can truly be separated from the harm it once represented.
