to close to the end you can bend the swedging(that is how the suture material is held on by the needle) de-activate the swedge it is now considered a pop-off. If you need to send a suture into bone without drilling a hole you can grab the needle fairly close to the point, this will not allow the needle to bend while you're driving it through the cortex of the bone.
