@emmyxtech: By 2050 around 300 million people are expected to face routine flooding, and the United States alone is looking at seawall costs that could exceed 400 billion dollars to defend its coastlines. Terranova is making the opposite bet and lifting the land itself. Their first project is in San Rafael, California, where parts of the Canal District sit several feet below sea level. A seawall there would cost between 500 and 900 million dollars. Terranova quotes 92 million dollars to lift 240 acres by four feet. The slurry comes from waste wood that would otherwise be burned or landfilled, and once it is injected 40 to 60 feet underground it consolidates in about two hours. As long as it stays wet the wood does not decompose, so the land stays stable and the buried biomass acts as a long-term carbon sink. They closed a 7 million dollar seed round led by Outlander and Congruent Ventures, three times oversubscribed. #Tech #technews #flooding #hardtech #robots

Mike :
Wood chips are biodegradable. Slurry infers that the pulp is mixed with water. Wet wood rots faster. As the water is absorbed into the ground you will lose some of the lift as the pulp dries. Then you will slowly lose lift as the wood pulp decomposition takes place. So you lose lift or get sinkholes.

okay well this is all well and good until the wood chips start rotting/settling. Because well...we all know that wood on the ground WILL rot. that is guaranteed. And when this happens, the substrate will then start going back down/settling. SO the only way to combat this is to infuse them with anti-rot agents/chemicals OR you keep pumping the ground with wood chips. neither of these would last very long
