@dr.patt.exotic.vet: This baby rat came in for excessive scratching and grooming and the cause is more common than many owners realize. #rat #ratcare #exoticpet #drpattexoticvet #littlecrittersvet
Also, you’ve already introduced your new rat with mites into the mischief you have to treat ALL of the rats for mites and deep clean the cage and all accessories.

He has mites or ringworm. It's sadly very common with pet store rats.

Can I recommend going back and making follow up videos for past patients so we can know the outcomes and actual sicknesses because a lot of times you’ll say what you think is going on but no definite outcomes are really posted and I am interested like with the ferret

Rat Randomness :
Mites. But not all of them bite people. The kind that do are fairly visible. Its so nice to see a vet who actually knows about rats. So many, we do have to educate as pet owners/breeders and its frustrating. As to myco its fairly endemic in rats since they have to be born via c-section or in a sterile lab setting, or to rats who are allready myco neg in order to NOT have it. I love that your checking all the things to see what exactly is going on. 💕

hes a double rex. so his fur will fall out and be patchy, and will grow back in full, and then fall out all over again. its normal for double rex rats. -from a breeder.

I was gonna say might because I’ve ran into that problem a couple times with new adoptees and rescues. It can be especially hard for me to spot when they have natural Rex genes but once I see them scratches, I know when I’m looking at most of the time.

The rat mites are horrible! Ivermectin was the only treatment that seemed to work. Constant vacuuming and using rubbing alcohol on bites on humans also worked. New Bedding can also have mites in it.
