This is why it’s not only appropriate but it’s necessary to clarify that trans rights matter, but women’s rights are and should be the priority. Trans women will benefit from women’s rights, but not the other way around. This is very nuanced, but it is related in my mind to the de gendering of subjects such as sex abuse, and domestic violence. There is a trend towards people trying to claim that women are offending as often as men and men are victimized as often as women; both are patently false and dangerous claims. As soon as men enter the picture and try to claim they are equally victims or that women are equally offenders, it completely undermines the efforts made BY WOMEN to protect the majority of victims (women and children). In the same vein, we cannot pretend or allow there to be any conversation around trans rights being even equal to, let alone more important than, women’s rights. Women’s rights is the blanket that covers trans rights, as it should be. WOMEN are who move things forward in society, women are who protected trans people and helped the gay men in the aids crisis. It’s women who protect communities. Women who raise and protect children. Women who care for the sick, wounded, and elderly. Women, women, women. We must protect women and children and in turn, we will protect and uplift our trans sisters and brothers.
