It’s exhausting .. I’ve been in software engineering for 7+ years, and especially over the past 1-2 years, it’s been the same cycle of anxiety and excitement over and over again. Honestly, this was one of the more real things I’ve seen here .. it really is exhausting. The constant upskilling and learning new things after a 10 hour work day slowly wears you down. Sometimes it feels like the only people truly benefiting from all of this are shareholders and the C-suite. AI is an incredible tool, but in many ways it has objectively made my life worse because of how aggressively companies keep pushing expectations higher and higher.

Just wait until it’s no longer subsidized and companies have to pay the real cost

i’m also a big tech ux designer in the same boat… i feel like my days went from 20% meetings + 80% Figma work to now 50% meetings, 40% prompting ai, 10% Figma + extra 10% (or more) overtime to catch up on new ai tools/features. I miss spending entire afternoons just listening to podcasts while working in Figma 😭

yeah I'm getting out of the industry after 10+ years, I can't find a decent role anymore because so many companies think they don't need as many of us anymore. no idea what's next. terrifying.

It is a lot about systems thinking as well, you cannot have good results with AI if you don’t understand the problem yourself. From my pov AI results are bloated as well, I spend so much time fixing slop instead of actually designing

IT professionals are turning into sources of truth and eventually QA until AI is good enough to do that, too.

Looking at the bright side, you’re really good at storytelling. Probably something is valuable for years to come.

I love UI/UX and design roles in general but was scared to transition into it due to this… I love putting in some of the manual effort when it comes to creativity because it makes me feel more accomplished and proud of the outcome 😭

Hopefully to calm your anxiety with this comment because it’s something that we’re dealing with too, but look at it through the lens of you’re still going to need quality assurance from a reputable UX designer to understand end to end process. Just because the tool has changed doesn’t mean the process is going away - that being said, we will see more and more companies who conducted layoffs realize that they’re shipping poor products from individuals that do not understand their users through an empathetic lens. Keep leaning on your soft skills, keep leaning on your traditional discovery process, keep trying to innovate with AI. We are passing the point of fighting, go with the flow and continue to shine.

It’s all gonna come crashing down. Our company is failing to see any ROI on any of this AI spending. Everyone’s overworked producing mid level designs with AI. Nothings really changing on the revenue side. I feel like a big whiplash is coming

I used to work in a marketing agency and clients didn’t want to pay for photo shoots of their products so they told us to use AI instead. At first the images sucked but time passed and the programs got better and better til the photos look completely real. I was feeling proud of the quality of my work and then it hit me. That’s not my work, that’s a bot’s work…

As a UX UI designer with 10 years of experience. AI is the tool with steroids, the designer is the boss. I have created 3 different platforms and apps without needing a developer. I think the developer is going to be the one that’s going to be away from the picture

bye I graduated 2024 and only have <2 years of experience in UI/UX/digital design and already feel like I have to pivot 💀 because it genuinely feels like all jobs in this field have dried up within just a few months? I’ve never seen job boards so empty

I don’t think designers will be replaced. How does the AI know what to build, what to iterate if they don’t have human input? My skills are evolving too, prototyping is faster, bringing concepts and ideas too but now I’m more focused on talk with real people, discovering their needs, seeing their reactions, failures with those prototypes. I think this is a beautiful moment. UX is finally getting closer to humans while AI enhances the tools to design.
