She isn’t unreliable, it’s just a first-person book. She doesn’t have all the information, but she isn’t withholding what she does have. Her only “unreliable” narration is her being overly cautious, but she’s only giving her perspective while still giving the reader all the facts.

The first time I read the books I did NOT understand any of this and I was so confused as to why anyone was “team Peeta” since Katniss didn’t really love him. Then I read them again as an adult lol

I never studied the concept of an unreliable narrator. I'm curious if it breaks down into different types of unreliable. Because I see the term used for different ways in which the narrators are reliable, and I feel like it kind of needs to be divided and clarified what type of unreliable narrator they are, I think that's important.

she thinks he sees THROUGH her to her "true self" when we (as readers) are constantly re-affirmed that she's not that (we are in her head.) She is exceptional. She is also not likeable , because she's not TRYING TO BE. Peeta understood how and why to be likeable. She is violent, or at least deadly. This is the least flattering, most aggressive way to view her!

This is part of why Gale is such an annoying person to ha e ariu d her.Because for all her stubbornness and self-reliance, she somehow takes everything he says as bible (we're meant to be; i am rebellion, Peeta is Capitol; you disagree with my violent machinations but you'll let it go anyway after a short argument). Where she thinks Peeta sees through to her true self (he does) and manipulates that (she's the one person he isn't trying to manipulate), it's actually Gale doing that. He plays on all of her insecurities perfectly and that really screws them over after the games. Also, Haymitch does that,too! It's not that they spoke the same language with the gifts in the arena, it's that Haymitch understood how she would overthink things and played with that. His not getting involved after the games worked with Gale getting involved making it worse for both victors bc by CF Katniss is convinced of a bunch of wrong assumptions (not all of it becomes it was all an act; her suffering and their victory affects only her, Peeta becomes a millstone around her neck until the risk of losing him is unavoidable). Hence, hinging a rebellion on a teenager who performs best with another teenager the rebellion keeps ignoring/abandoning was a dumb move. 😭😂
