the amount of times I've had to tell the vets what's wrong with my pets, isn't that your job

I’m an RVN and there’s a few things that don’t strike me as true or atleast left out for the benefit of the story. Always to paint the vets in a bad light and deflect away from the owners choices

Three options for IVDD, imaging&surgery (expensive but gold standard) pain relief, rest and reassess and (and we have to) give the third option which is euthanasia because without surgery prognosis can be bad. Offering doesn’t mean you need to pick that option. Some people put complaints because you don’t offer euthanasia. It’s all about being able to explain what’s happening, give all the options and alternatives and keep the animal from pain.

I mean it is IVDD, it really depends on staging and whether their quality of life is good or not. They should have given you the options like the second vets did

With some vets, it’s just money to them, which is really sad

My dog went for an x ray just before he turned 10 cause he was coughing a lot. During the x ray they rang me whilst he was still under anaesthetic and said they wanted to put him to sleep as he has a collapsed trachea. I was obviously in total shock! Told them not to as he just went in for a routine x ray and we’d not said goodbye to him or anything so she was like oh yeah sure let’s wake him up, we had the intention to take him home for a couple of days then make the decision to put him to sleep. But I read more on collapsed tracheas and found there was lots of things we can do to make him comfortable and baring in mind he was only coughing pretty mildly at this point! He’s now almost 14 years old and still going strong! So sad I would have missed another 4 years + with him if I’d listened to them!

Well they weren’t in it for the money as that would be the cheapest treatment option

so many instances where people have taken their dogs to vets to be safe rather then sorry and the dog was fine and now they have a hefty bill to pay

you know what happened there. they judged you that you wouldn't be able to afford the treatments

That’s why I don’t go to private vets who are purely in it for profit and would highly recommend animal trust they have them all over the uk only charge for the prescription and for the actual treatment

This is why I didn’t listen to my vets when my dachshund came down with ivdd. We went to a specialist for a second opinion and he’s still here today loving life in his wheelchair 🐶

as a vet student i’d like to defend them, however when my dog was 8 he had bad ear infections and the vet recommended euthanasia, we got a different opinion from another vet and they brought in an ear specialist who cleared him up in a few weeks! He’s now 14 and doing great

My 3 year old frenchie was diagnosed with IVDD 18 months ago, paralysis in hind legs. Our vet was brilliant in giving us the options, we chose to go for crate rest and medication. It took 6 weeks of crate rest, around the clock care, physio and hydrotherapy. She’s walking around like no tomorrow, we just don’t take her on long walks and stop her jumping on sofas, climbing up stairs etc. 🖤

My frenchie had IVDD too and had the surgery. Some vets just want the easy way out

Absolute best advice is to always get a second opinion. I don’t trust many vets. I have one vet I’d trust my dogs life and soul with
