At the Cannes press conference for the Korean film “Hope,” journalist Helen Barlow admitted she only knew Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander — while sitting directly in front of acclaimed Korean director Na Hong-jin and major Korean stars Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Jung Ho-yeon. Taylor Russell was there too, apparently invisible as well. And just when everyone thought the cringe had peaked, she followed it up with a bargain-bin joke asking whether Fassbender and Vikander were hired “2 for the price of 1.” Nothing says “international film journalism” quite like showing up to Cannes completely unprepared, ignoring half the cast, and publicly embarrassing yourself in front of the global film industry.
