I’ve always thought their relationship started to struggle when she stopped wanting to hide the way she did during the Reputation era. I think the cracks started showing during the Reputation tour, and that’s when he started becoming uncomfortable with her level of fame. You can hear the anxiety of potentially losing him over it throughout Lover. Then COVID happened, which forced them back into a more reclusive lifestyle, something that seems much more aligned with what Joe prefers. COVID gave them a lifeline, but then with the release of the TV albums and midnights, the game got crazier than it ever has been before and it was a sinking ship.
