Wan shi tong is objectively not justified in betraying "the good guys". First to understand this we have to view just how important this information is the information was one of the only chances the gang would have to rid 5h2 world from the horror of the fire nation that was potent enough to wipe out a culture and im almost took away another form of bending again if not for aang his crew and yue. And wan shi tong knew the horrors of what the fire nation did and knowing that the AVATAR who is supposed to be the bridge between humans and spirits puts the horrors of war and a potential way to end a nation ending war above one spirits concerns which was wan shi tong and qe still see aang later plead with him on taking the knowledge and try to explain to wan shi tong why they need this information but wan shi tong could not apply common reasoning and aptitude to the fact that the avatar might need this knowledge for the benefit of the world over his feelings and concerns but he just didnt and that would have been OK if all he had done was rel9cate his library to the spirit world where it would be near impossible for humans to access the knowledge but to then easily be manipulated and bend over backwards for unalaq just because h3 can calm a rampaging spirit but not question him for a second when unalaq wanted to kidnap another child but suddenly gets super worked up when the avatar wants to take information that could potentially save the world from a force that had been destroying it for over a 100 years and the fact is that wan shi tong still sees the fire nation destroy alot of the library's knowledge because they didnt want others to use it but wan shi tong doesnt think for a second that when the avatar shows up looking for information on the same people that destroyed most of your library trying to stop them you shun him away because you are sad putting your concerns over the remaining world and suddenly very angry when the avatar who puts a more important issue which is the fate of the world over his feelings.😭

His job is to protect the knowledge in HIS library. If you misuse that knowledge or betray his trust in any way, regardless whether or not you’re justified, you’re either getting kicked out or trapped in there for all eternity.
