When I was a child, the DSM didn’t allow for both an ADHD and Autism diagnosis at the same time…. I couldn’t have gotten the diagnosis at the time.

Me and my brother, 14 months apart in age, saw professionals from the same time when we was young, I think like 6 years old maybe, he was instantly diagnosed with autism and although they also suspected me with autism, I still didn't get my official diagnosis till I was 14/15 years old, it's much harder to get a diagnosis as a girl

Positive fact about being autistic is that we do investigate even painfully to discover what is “wrong” with us. When we do, we find out that there is nothing wrong with us but with environmental. Level 2 & 3 really need social accommodations. Level 1 is difficult enough to know that. We need spaces, treatment, visibility. Society has to include all levels of autism to make life bearable for us. This video is the wider perspective I ‘ve heard so far. I self diagnosed at 65 yo. Went though hell to get an expensive medical diagnose. Thank you!

It’ll cost me at minimum $1000 to try to get a diagnosis. I’m in Canada, it should be covered under our healthcare, I have done all the tests and all of them confirm it, but I can’t afford the fee, I could barely afford to get to the out-of-town clinic, since the nearest to me is over an hour away.

I’m 33 (white Irish male) only just got diagnosed AuDHD a month ago. I was in the waitlist for two years. It’s reframed my life and while I understand the desire to self diagnose I fully needed the diagnosis to process it.

my psychiatrist and psychologist say i am most likely autistic (from childhood experiences, the way i talk, the way others refer to me, my problems with textures, etc), but the diagnosis is so expensive and i have no use for it now since im an adult, so i just kinda accepted i might be😭

Even in Australia, it can cost up to $2000 to get diagnosed as autistic (child/adult). Or sit on a waiting list (for children) for years and years in the public system.

Self diagnosis doesn’t always mean no diagnosis. It just means no formal diagnosis. I am considered self diagnosed but I have been diagnosed by therapists and doctors who specialize in autism. It just “doesn’t count” to the government because I didn’t pay for a formal diagnosis.

Can I add one? A small but significant minority of us are also severely struggling with physical disability too. Getting an official autism diagnosis is the absolute least of my concerns right now, and many of us can’t physically tolerate going through a lengthy assessment process

I'm pretty sure I'm autistic.And I'll never seek a diagnosis, because even if i go through with it, i will not get any support whatsoever. There's none in my country. On the other hand, researching Au helps me learn how to regulate my nervous system.Teaches me stuff about myself.

My daughter at 6 years old. I asked the school, “should have her assessed?” Answer: “No, she will grow out of it”. My son, 6 years later, also 6 years old, same school. I asked the same question and they immediately agreed, he was diagnosed 6 months later. My daughter is still waiting in her diagnosis. It’s been almost 2 years.
