K2-18 b is one of the most intriguing known exoplanets, located approximately 120 – 124 light-years from Earth. It orbits the red dwarf star K2-18 and resides in the so-called habitable zone, where temperatures could theoretically support liquid water. K2-18 b is significantly larger than Earth: its radius is approximately 2.6 times that of Earth, and its mass is approximately 8.6 times that of Earth. Scientists speculate that it may be a "Hycean" planet—a world with a deep global ocean beneath a thick hydrogen atmosphere. Observations by the James Webb Space Telescope have revealed the presence of methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, consistent with the waterworld hypothesis. Of particular interest were reports of the possible detection of dimethyl sulfide (DMS), a substance primarily produced by living organisms in the oceans on Earth. However, these results remain controversial, and to date, there is no evidence of life on K2-18 b. However, many astronomers consider it one of the most promising targets for the search for extraterrestrial life, as it is one of the few known worlds where an atmosphere, water, and suitable conditions for biological processes could potentially simultaneously exist. #scary #space #earth #astrophysics
