It's not so much that they are overcharging insurance, it's that insurance companies pay pennies on the dollar so they have to bill the insurance company at a much higher price in order to get a higher compensation in the end. If you look at the bill of what the insurance company paid for that same stay you'll see it's probably half of what you paid. think of it as negotiating a price. You have a target price that you need to get to but in order to get there you have to start high because the insurance company will come back at significantly less.

Yes it’s overcharging of insurance, but also they give the discount bc most people won’t pay the 22k out of pocket, it’s easier for them to charge 2.4K and receive more payments

It’s not who knows. That is how it works. Insurance companies and hospitals always want higher prices. As the person with insurance, you’re just the sucker that pays with no choice in the transaction.
