My classmate from college actually started the dot com boom. He started a company called theglobe.com and it was largely recognized as the first successful internet ipo.i remember clearly asking him what his page did and he told me he hosted chat rooms and web pages. I didn’t understand why people were throwing money at his site. As you can guess, since you probably never heard of the site, theglobe.com eventually went belly up, but not before he became a multimillionaire.

Yeah. That's the drive people have. When there's an opportunity, everyone rushes in. Some work, some don't. Failed businesses happen all the time. What made the dot com bubble different was the combination of companies with broken business models burning cash with no real path to profit, and the Fed raising interest rates which pulled investor money away globally. Asia was already hurting from their own 1997 crisis, so the timing made everything worse. The companies just run out of luck, money, and time simultaneously.
