I’d be way more open to the Dem’s argument around moderation if it was applied selectively. You want to run moderates in purple/red states? Sure. But then no more moderates in blue states. People like Schumer, Gillibrand, Schiff, and Padilla need to be replaced with progressives.

Manchin wasn't corporate aligned. he was someone who had a 100K salary for 30 years. he is top 1% in his state.

Joe manchin realized how toxic being a Democrat is in west Virginia that’s why he switched to independent but then he realized that was going to do him no good and he was in for a 30 plus point loss in 2024

I feel like part of this can be remedied by running left leaning independents in red states like Dan Osborne or Seth Bodner and then having them caucus with Dems like Bernie Sanders and Angus King do

Love your content. As a Democrat in the South who potentially would love to run for office one day what messaging do believe can result in a winner in the South?

I disagree on the thorn in leadership point. The headlines of Manchin sinking this or that bill was absolutely necessary for his brand as someone who isn’t a mainstream Democrat. But he would give back very strategically so he isn’t just a Republican. The lesson from Manchin is that both the average voter and state leadership need to know you and what you have accomplished before they accept you as a serious candidate.

I feel like they could do what they did in Nebraska to win in states like WV. We’ll see how it goes in Nov, but that could be the move in those types of states.

I’m originally from that region, it’s because of NAFTA, coal mines, and learn to code. People in West Virginia and surrounding areas associate Democrats with the export of high paying Appalachian coal jobs and out of touch people telling them to just “learn to code” with very few jobs actually coming out of that.

I need to be careful with anti-corporation policy. This is a separate talk from rhetoric. The reality is corporations are great wealth creations that we can use to redistribute. Everyone says McDonald’s isn’t as good as a local restaurant, but McDonald’s offers better benefits. Big corporations with economies of scale tend to be better for workers. We need to make sure corporations are subservient to the state, but there needs to be a place for them. We have to have some pro corporate vision at least a little bit.

I think this raises two questions. First, what is the actual value of moderation? Could a moderate could win states that are 5-8 points away not 20? Or does it just close the gap in states that are too far gone for now? Second, what does it means to be anti corruption and anti corporate? Democrats have been significantly more anti corporate than Republicans, but don't seem to get any benefit to that. Is there a certain threshold that will trigger trust there? And how do Democrats make it a core issue, not just one of many issues?

A lot of the issue here in WV is that voters are disengaged. Everybody hates the system and knows it’s broke but to most there’s no hope. There’s a lot of grudges held by many people here against Democrats for their perceived betrayal. WV used to be extremely Democratic and I think Machin symbolized that old Democrat style that West Virginians were used to. A lot of the political base of the Democrats in WV has been gutted too, the unions are gone and so are many of the coal jobs related to it.

Playbook for these areas: Run as an independent focused on progressive economic policies and bringing back coal. Moderate or even slightly conservative on social issues and be religious. Might not be 100% aligned with party platform but better than taking the L

I agree with this and I think it's one of the most compelling cases for why we need to be pushing the conversation around how we reform elections to break the two party system. The ways in which party affiliation has become tied to identity and is secondary to policy means that both the Democratic and Republican Party brands are going to be toxic in ways that are uniquely difficult to change outside of generational or even multi-generational time-frames. moderates on either side are not going to be able to stitch together coalitions big enough to actually do anything. This impasse won't be resolved without massive restructuring of the system to allow people to break from their current parties without having to vote for the party they view as even worse.

People running against Republicans, especially progressives or at least pro-union people, should run as independents in state-wide races in deep red states. People are so divided they won’t vote for Dems just because they’re Dems. That or run as a Republican in the primary

Manchin held off the worst spending impulses of the Bernie led budget debacle that created 6% annual deficits but kept the biggest climate and manufacturing impact the BBB had to offer. Moderating dumb ideas that are fiscally irresponsible isn’t a bug, it’s a feature of shared power and governance. He even was willing to go $11 for the min wage but Bernie wanted to hold at $15 so the deal didn’t get done, that aged poorly for states that still sit at $7.25.
