@calmmoneycoach: How do you actually retire off a million bucks in Canada? Most people get told to withdraw 4 percent and call it a plan. It works in a spreadsheet. Then the market drops 30 percent in year two of retirement and the math falls apart. Here’s a single Ontario retiree at 65. Million dollar portfolio. Target spend 60 grand a year. The combination: → RRSP, 400 grand. GIC ladder plus VBAL. The shock absorber. → TFSA, 250 grand. All XEQT. Compounds untouched for 20 years. → Non registered, 350 grand. VCN and ZDB. Tax efficient both ways. Then the Canadian income piece. OAS at 65. CPP deferred to 70 for the 42 percent bonus. Convert the RRSP to a RRIF at 65 to unlock the pension income tax credit and start draining at the lowest brackets. Top up the TFSA each year with anything you don’t need. Pull from the TFSA for vacations, a new roof, lean years. Tax free for life. Tax free to your beneficiaries. PWL’s Graham Westmacott modeled this in 2019. Combining strategies cut worst case shortfall by 76 percent versus any single one alone. Same retiree. Same money. Different approach. Realistic Combinations series. Not advice and consult with your advisor for your situation. Keeping it simple tends to do well for the patient investor. Coming up: the 500 grand tight money couple. The 2 million plus wealthy retiree. The bond tent. The annuitizer. The dividend focused. #RetirementPlanning #CanadianFinance #RRSP #TFSA #CPP
too much info to digest.
I'll need a paper, pen and 0.5xspeed 🤓
thanks 👍🏻

A million? I’ll be lucky if I retire with a few hundred thousand. I won’t ever be able to retire

Any reason you pick ZDB over other bond ETFs? I’m thinking ZAG (although higher risk), or ZST (higher yield, but sensitivity to interest rates)?

Excellent commentary and explanation. Not just the 4 percent mindless drivel and no context that markets can go very bad against you.

Why do people always default to ‘you gotta sell’? No you don’t. When it’s time to retire, restructure your portfolio so it generates 4 - 5% in dividends, and you don’t have to ‘draw down’.

BS, just by blue chip dividends. When was the last time a bank missed a dividend? No need to be concerned about market volatility. As a bonus your dividends will over the long run go up with inflation. Save your hard earned money and do it yourself.

You need at least 3 million to live off 120k @ 4% and maybe more to account for any contingencies in the market.
