@corporatedropout_mom: When you are a high performer reporting to an insecure manager can be a real challenge. This type of manager is easily threatened by your knowledge, efficiency and ability to tackle tasks. You would think these are things to be applauded. However, to the insecure manager these shine a light onto their own inadequacies and incompetence. So to cover that they often gaslight and retaliate. Ever experience this at work? #corporatelife #highperformer #managersbelike #worklife #humanresources
Could you do one about an insecure manager trying to fire a high performer?

Oh, absolutely. I once wrote a paper for publication for our entire team. My boss suggested *my* name be removed.

Boss: “So here’s the deal: we want you to fully own this process we built and be accountable for every outcome, including the ones that are realistically outside your authority or control. And if you identify structural gaps, communication failures, or workflow issues within the process itself, we’re going to reframe those concerns as personality or communication problems instead of operational ones. That way we can avoid addressing the friction built into the system, keep things operating the way they are, and still hold you responsible whenever something goes sideways.”

I once had a boss tell me not to talk to my super-boss (her boss) when he dropped by my workplace and asked me questions about things I was responsible for and resources I needed to do my job. I was like, ummm, no. He outranks you. If he asks me a direct question, I’m either going to answer him or I’m going to tell him flat out that you told me not to talk to him about that and let you handle that fallout. I don’t want to be involved in your power games.

"just to make sure I'm understanding everything fully, would you mind sending that to me in writing in an email so I have it to refer back to? that'd be great."

I was told, and I quote “Take ownership without taking ownership” and “stay in your lane” Apparently, I was making management insecure about their own abilities.

At the meeting: Co-worker: Grouchy - on that report you filed? Was it X or Y result? Me: Boss has instructed me to have him answer all questions in this meeting and I’m not permitted to speak. Boss - go ahead and answer the question please.

Are you listening to my conversations at work? Because I literally had my “leader” say the identical things to me this week.

I unfortunately had that kind of supervisor and it is hell, everything was son vague and he was very reactive over everything, even something that is routine and can be just have a talk. Write ups that were not explained the reason or policy,if you answered to the write up it was another problem, which made it even more difficult to talk to him. Like, I cannot explain you years of experience in 10 minute meetings.

😩 I feel this to my core! It also causes a loop because I defer to her and then she comes back around to me to answer it since she doesn’t actually know the answer. It’s like banging my head on the wall!

can you do the one where the manager asks you to say 'no' to a stakeholder and then they go ahead and have private discussion with them and revert back to you ,with the stakeholder in cc, asking you to do the exact thing they told you to say no to.

hear me out. I wfh. I finish all my tasks. Well ahead of time. And I get questioned about my idle times. I said I have done all my tasks. And they said: "find something to do." So I asked them if they have anymore tasks for me. They said no. A few weeks after, I consistently do and finish my tasks as usual. Then they asked a meeting, telling me to do basically a job that's out of my scope anymore... I just feel like they don't know how to manage well, their high performer. My idle times are not from not working, it's from working too well, apparently... ugh. now, I'm looking for another company to work for, hopefully someone who actually values work, not what the timer says. 🤷

oh my God this one's a little too close to home lol The manager hated that people came to me - even other managers would come to me for answers because even if I didn't know it right away I usually knew how to find the answer.
