I wonder if booktok have changed the readers expectations over the past years. The amount of popular releases, especially in romance, tend to do exactly this. They explain almost every beat, and people seem to disregard books which doesn't do it. So many times I have seen the "I just want to turn off my brains". Any thoughts on this? 🤔

“when a writer doesn’t trust a reader…” that’s actually rly powerful

I'm writing comics and sometimes I see like other artist put the big wall of text every panel to explain what's going on in characters head, I sometimes just make them stay silent and just follow their emotions and body language. Like when I had two characters talking about their past one of them told about relationships "That thing is always a transaction", just looking over his shoulder with poker face. And total silence during few next different panels. How she looks at him, how he looks at her and his face expression changes from fake smile to just sadness, how they stare to each other, then he realises she will not answer the question he asked before that line about transaction ("how did you make them love you? and what did you gave them? talking about her parents) and just turn his head saying "Nevermind".

How do we write interiority without telling? I'm genuinely concerned because I AM taking this literally 😅

currently doing this on my work in progress fiction!! if the imagery or dramatization is enough to paint a vivid picture, what it means, or what the characters or readers feel, no need to explain it further 😁

It's honestly so annoying to read! Especially in romance books, because it doesn't feel romantic anymore, the attraction literally disappears and looks staged, thus, not interesting... 🥲

I write romance, and it's like readers need that tell after the show. honestly, I hate adding the tell, it's feel dumb

Oh no. Now I have to go check to see if I did this at all. 🤣 But like always thanks for the tip. I feel like I am sticking a new index card with a note to my wall or fixing something every time you come up on my fyp. Gonna have to write a whole thank you page to you in my book from the amount of help you’ve unknowingly given me.

but the mainstream is rewarding explicative and clear plot where readers feel more like viewers getting manipulated with how to feel and what to know about characters..it became lame and exhausting to read

Love this! My first draft had a lot of this sort of thing going on, and I’m now stripping it out during this first round of edits. I can’t decide if I wrote those little recaps because I lacked trust, or if it’s some old habit left over from scholastic writing where we always had to “sum it up” afterward…maybe a little of both? I dunno, but I’m learning so much in the process! 🙌🏼✍🏼

So if I have a mother clasping a pearl necklace on my mc without asking and her sister arguing with her mother about it b/c it’s in appropriate then this interiority that follows is explanation: Their muttered arguments continue as I drown them out, the necklace shimmering in the wide gilded mirror. They hadn’t asked for my opinion, how I felt about wearing it—that to me it was a mark of shame rather than honor. A scarlet letter. They just decided for me, and on cue, I let them. It’s safer that way.

i started writing..at last. and i realized as i reread the first 2 chapters that the first half of my first chapter i had the tendency to let the authorial voice bleed into the narrative, and slightly explain what i already showed. i got better at not doing that in chapter 2,but granted, the first one was hardest because i had to do multiple things at once: set tone, set hook, introduce characters without exposition. chapter 2 was easier to write, even if i changed pov lense. i'll get better at it and edit it eventually
