“I had an awakening today. I will never be the same version of myself twice.” That sounds inspiring until you stop and ask: Which self? The one that changed? Or the one that noticed the change? Because if the self is never the same twice, then it has no stability. No center. No foundation. No continuity. It’s just a moving target endlessly describing its latest update. Today it’s healed. Tomorrow it’s triggered. Today it’s awakened. Tomorrow it’s evolving. Today it’s reborn. Tomorrow it’s reinvented. That’s not freedom. That’s maintenance. Notice how the entire statement assumes that change proves growth. But change by itself proves nothing. A stock price changes. The weather changes. A mood changes. A hallucination changes. Change is not evidence of truth. In fact, truth is the one thing that doesn’t need to change. Imagine saying, “Gravity had an awakening today.” Or, “The number 7 is becoming a better version of itself.” The statement sounds absurd because reality doesn’t need improvement. The deeper question is this: If there is a part that comes and goes, changes and evolves, then there must also be something that notices all those changes. Otherwise, who knows they happened? Maybe awakening isn’t becoming a new version of the self. Maybe it’s discovering that what is real was never a version at all. And if the “old me” is gone and the “new me” will be gone too, what is it that’s been present through every version?
