@rarebirdreport: A black skimmer carefully offers a fish to its chick — a difficult meal for such a tiny bird, but an important lesson in growing up along the shoreline. Black skimmers are unlike any other bird. As they mature, their lower mandible grows longer than the upper, allowing them to fly low over the water with the bottom bill slicing through the surface until it snaps shut on a fish. It’s one of the most specialized hunting techniques in the bird world. For now though, this chick is still learning… one oversized fish at a time. 📸 Photographer unknown, please dm for credit!
