vinegar!!! we clean our stainless steel pans by simmering straight vinegar and using a balled up paper towel and tongs to "scrub" the residue. it's safe and very effective and there's no scratching like with a metal scrubber. the vinegar does most the work

not hot enough...dont blame the manufacturer when you make the mistake...you have to test stainless before you put your butter or even bread for that matter...
