As a midwife, it becomes muscle memory. It takes a lot of practice, and it is not an exact science 😅

Studies have actually show that when comparing cervical checks done by two different experienced L & D nurses they are unable to consistently get the same measurements. It seems to be that it’s less about the measurement and more about the continuous experience of a nurse to know when you are not ready vs are ready.

Lots of practice, at this point I just know what each centimeter feels like. When we’re new we have beads and boards we compare to until it’s muscle memory. It’s not a stupid question, we have a weird skill.

Okay hi L&D nurse here!! This is a great question! So we’re assessing for a few things- dilation (how open your cervix is), effacement (how thin/thick it is) and station (where baby’s head is in your pelvis). Honestly, some of it is a vibe and it takes years to master! But over time you learn exactly how many centimeters your 2 finger measurements are and you memorize that! We feel landmarks from your pelvic bones, and landmarks on our fingers on how thick it is! Sometimes we may differ slightly in opinion on what someone’s cervical exam measurement is, but honestly 99% of the time we can all feel the same thing!! Congrats in advance on your sweet baby girl and hope this helped a little 😅💗

My fave was when the student OB got it wrong and said I was 7, and the nurse was like wrong check again and I was in fact at a 10. Never been happier that a doctor was wrong in my life.
